Papuan Strike Halts World’s Biggest Gold Mine

A few clicks on the keyboard of his computer was enough to get Simon Windesi and his friends riled up about the low wages their employer, a global mining giant, pays in this far-flung Indonesian province.

After years of toiling at Freeport-McMoRan’s gold and copper mine in easternmost Papua province — where tribesman can still be found living a near-Stone Age existence in dense jungles and rugged mountains — many still get just $1.80 an hour.

“That’s a 10th what the company pays workers in other countries!” the 43-year-old said after a quick Internet search. “And this is their biggest profit-maker. Their production costs are the lowest. How does that make sense?”

The men are among 10,000 employees who — while renegotiating contracts and protesting the dismissal of six union leaders — last week brought operations at the Grasberg mine to a standstill.

Within days of launching their July 4 strike, the site, a sooty kilometer-wide gash in the otherwise lush Puncak Jaya mountain range, was all but abandoned.

Gray piles of ore stood untouched. Trucks had stopped ferrying copper and gold concentrate to the port. And cargo ships, empty, had no place to go. Grasberg’s known gold reserves are the world’s largest and it is also one of the biggest copper mines.

Sinta Sirait, vice president of PT Freeport Indonesia, said Tuesday that management and union officials reached an agreement just before midnight Monday.

Details of the new contract have yet to be released, however, and there was no sign by mid afternoon that the mine was coming back to life.

“We need everyone to get back to work as quickly as possible,” Sirait told reporters. “Many sites are filling up with water. We have to get them dried out.”

Indonesia has had a long, complicated relationship with Freeport — and Papua, its most remote province, both geographically and politically.

Months after Gen. Suharto seized power in a 1965 coup, Jim Moffett, Freeport’s chairman, reached out to the dictator, forming what was to become a close friendship and eventually winning the right to explore for gold and copper.

Freeport, now based in Phoenix, Arizona, pumped $175 million into Papua to build a Western-standard road, pipelines, an airstrip and a new, first-class mining town — all of it to serve the mining operation.

The Grasberg mine helped bolster Suharto’s corrupt and often bloody regime until his 1998 ouster and, even today, remains one of the country’s biggest sources of income, helping shield it from outside criticism.

It generates more than $2 billion in taxes, royalties and dividends every year, according to data provided by the University of Indonesia’s Economic and Social Research Institute.

Natural Hemorrhoid Cure?

A new site (http://hemorrhoids-hemroids-piles.com/) helps people find treatment and relief for their Hemorrhoids and Piles.

According to Dwight Swenson:”There are many companies and products claiming to be permanent Hemorrhoids cures but many of these tall claims are no more than scams. Some of these products including stool softeners may make your situations worse. Some creams and gels, though termed as natural, do not provide permanent solution. However, the new treatment called H miracle, discovered by an independent researcher is the trusted and proven method used as a nearly complete and permanent hemorrhoids relief.”

most of the patients have admitted that their hemorrhoid is gone for good along with the embarrassment and the pain associated with it after using this natural remedy.

“The remedy is 100% safe. It eliminates the need for the surgery or the creams and ointments that give the momentary relief from the pain. In the name of hemorrhoids cure, many people suggest diet rich in fiber” according to Swenson.

Long-Term recovery from tornadoes continues

After all the downed trees and piles of debris have been cleared away, after the FEMA registration closes, the work of scores of volunteers will continue. For many, this is when their work really starts. They are the disaster case managers, many of whom are volunteers. They give their time to ensure that the Saturday, April 16, 2011, storm survivors who have exhausted all other avenues of financial and emotional assistance receive the help they need.

In Wake County, those volunteers are part of the Wake Interfaith Disaster Team’s (WIDT) long-term recovery organization. This group has been tasked with coordinating the otherwise unmet needs of the survivors of the April tornadoes.

WIDT president Larry Marks points out that even though the shelters have closed and FEMA registration will end on July 5, 2011, assistance for damages caused by the tornadoes will still be available.

“If, after you register with FEMA and have filled out and returned the Small Business Administration form, you find you still have an unmet need,” Marks says, “contact the Wake Interfaith Disaster Team at 919-861-7440; for Spanish, the number is 919-861-7441.”

“As in any disaster of this type, when someone’s home is damaged or destroyed, they should contact their insurance company first,” Marks says. “If it is a presidentially declared disaster, as this one was, they should register with FEMA. But there are always some disaster-related needs that insurance companies, low-interest federal disaster loans, FEMA grants and state disaster assistance programs cannot fill. That is where organizations like the Wake long-term recovery organization come into play and will address the unmet needs with donated materials and volunteer labor.”

WIDT and its faith-based and governmental partners will work together to see that counseling is available and critical needs are met.

Wake Interfaith Disaster Team was formed in 2003 and has been recruiting individual congregations to prepare for disasters, as well as training members in ways to help themselves and each other when disasters occur.

First Pregnancies Are a Cake Walk (Mmmmm, Cake)

One of my talented co-writers here at The Stir posted an article on how first pregnancies usually seem harder than the subsequent ones—primarily because once you’ve been through the inflate-to-elephantine-proportions-then-painfully-disgorge-a-small-human-from-your-body process once, the follow-up gestational activities aren’t as challenging.

I can agree from a certain perspective. The actual physical effects of pregnancy weren’t new the second time around, so everything wasn’t quite as terrifying. I didn’t spend my entire pregnancy worried about whether or not a briefly inactive fetus meant that the baby was DEAD, for instance. I also didn’t bother with renting that fetal doppler thing so I could continually “reassure” myself that the baby’s heart was still beating.

(Say, did I ever tell you about how when we used the doppler during my first pregnancy I accidentally picked up my own slow, plodding adult heartbeat and became convinced my child had some sort of CRIPPLING DISEASE which I had caused by helping my husband paint the nursery? WHOO GOOD TIMES.)

Aside from generally knowing what sorts of unpleasantries to expect, though (hey, here come the hemorrhoids, right on schedule!), I would say that second pregnancies are WAY harder than the first. While I can’t speak from personal experience, I assume the same is true for third, fourth, and twelfth pregnancies.

The thing is, first pregnancies usually mean you can lie down and take a nap if you want, or spend 45 minutes with your head stuck in a refrigerator door scanning for the exact food you’re craving. You can go off by yourself and dreamily browse the infant section of a baby store in order to select the perfect coming-home outfit. You can ask your husband to go to the store at 11 PM for chocolate-peanut butter ice cream and he’ll actually go, because you’re a special pregnant princess whose body is a sacred vessel.

Second pregnancies? Forget ALL of that. Now you’ve got a needy toddler running around breaking shit 24/7, and there will be no napping for you. Oh, you’re spending every morning miserably barfing up everything you’ve eaten since 1987? Suck it up, buttercup, because Junior needs breakfast STAT. You’re dying for a meal of pickled gherkins and salted-caramel donuts, but you’re going to have to make do with a handful of stale cheese goldfish. You could drag your kid to the baby store and spend ten nightmarish minutes chasing him around while you huff and puff like a congested rhino, or you could just shop on Amazon.com. You’d ask your husband to get you ice cream, but he’s passed out cold from an evening of trying to get a bed-resistant toddler to take a damn bath.

Everyone who constantly asked you how you were feeling during your first pregnancy will remain silent during your second, except for a slight widening of the eyes as you waddle past, because even though you’re only 4 months along your belly already resembles an approaching submarine.

Did I mention the part about how there’s no napping? And that the Great Unknown of Life with a Newborn will be replaced by a growing sense of dread over how you’ll be able to handle caring for your existing child(ren) AND an infant?

So I say the first pregnancy is usually scarier, but by far the easiest in terms what the rest of your life looks like at the time. If pregnancy is a months-long hike up Everest, the second time is doing it without oxygen tanks.

Are Internal Hemorrhoids Curable?

Hemorrhoids may be considered as one of the most common conditions which are least reported. Needless to say, confiding with someone, even with the closest person on earth a person has, can still elicit shyness and awkward feelings. How much more if you have to consult a complete stranger about it? Still—hemorrhoids need to be addressed immediately because it can bring about a long list of complications one may suffer from in the long run.

Hemorrhoids are lesions in the anal orifice due to excessive strain a person exerts while defecating. As such, this is common especially when a person is frequently constipated. Also, this can happen to women as a result of natural childbirth where women exert too much effort in pushing the baby out of the womb. Diarrhea can also lead to hemorrhoids because of the projectile and forceful blow of the stool into the thin and sensitive anal lining.

There are actually two forms of hemorrhoids based on medical books. First is internal hemorrhoid—as the term suggests, these arise from the dilated veins inside the anal orifice. Tiny internal hemorrhoids may be indistinguishable but as time passes, these may grow large and protrude. External hemorrhoids on the other hand, are located outside the anal canal and may look like a normal part of the outer anal area.

Drugs For Internal Hemorrhoids Treatment

There are many drugs that can be used in order to manage the signs and symptoms, including the discomforts of having a hemorrhoid. However, these drugs are not expected to directly heal the hemorrhoids as these are simply symptomatic forms of management for Internal Hemorrhoids Treatment.

Topical creams may be applied and these creams may contain medications which can lessen pain by leaving the affected area numb and anesthetized, i.e. lidocaine, benzocaine, benzyl alcohol and the likes. These may come in the form of creams or gels that need to be inserted into the anus.

Vasoconstrictors are those drugs which lessen the vascularity of the veins in the anus. By this, it reduces swelling and inflammation. Phenylephrine and epinephrine are some of the common vasoconstrictors that can be applied.

In terms of protective layers and coverings, like what many creams do, the following can be applied: aluminum hydroxide, lanolin and glycerin. These substances provide a protective sheath above the inflamed blood vessels thereby lessening the pain and contact of these hemorrhoids to materials like fecal matters.

Medical and Surgical Procedures for Internal Hemorrhoids Treatment

Sclerotherapy involves the injection or incorporation of a drug or chemical that will cause inflammation and scarring of the vascular veins. Once these tissues have scarred, hemorrhoids will be gone. Apart from that rubber band ligation is another modality wherein a band is placed around the hemorrhoids to prevent blood circulation in the areas of the hemorrhoids. This will lead to the death of the excluded tissues and subsequently leads to scarring of the tissues.

Internal hemorrhoids treatment may vary depending on the severity and assessment of the hemorrhoids as observed your physician. Thus, it is always best to seek for his or her medical advice the earliest time possible.
